Alegria Publishes Policy Relevant Article on Diversity in Science

April 7, 2017

Assistant Professor Sharla Alegria, along with co-authors Laurel Smith-Doerr and Timothy Sacco (University of Massachusetts)  published an article in Engaging Science, Technology, and Society. This publication is the culmination of work the team completed and presented in Washington D.C. at the request of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under the Obama administration. The article provides an overview of the seemingly contradictory research on whether or not diverse teams outperform more homogeneous teams doing scientific work. The authors argue that that the presense of minority scientists is a necessary but insufficient condition for diversity to produce benefits; minority scientists must also be fully integrated into the team.
