In Fall 2016, UC Merced broke ground on a $1.3 billion public-private partnership that is unprecedented in higher education. The Merced 2020 Project will nearly double the physical capacity of the campus by 2020, enhancing academic distinction, student success and research excellence. UC Merced is also building the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building in the heart of Merced.
The Sociology Department at the University of California, Merced invites applications for two tenure-track Teaching Professor positions. We seek applicants with teaching interests in a wide variety of areas, especially those who can teach multiple required undergraduate courses (introductory sociology, research methods, statistics, and theory) as well as contribute to departmental and campus-wide curricular initiatives such as writing intensive, internship, and capstone courses. Other areas of teaching specialty are open and may include (but are not limited to): sociology of health, gender, race and ethnicity, political sociology, critical criminology, and law and society. Candidates with teaching experience in any substantive areas are encouraged to apply, but we are particularly interested in applicants that can offer a breadth of courses and demonstrate past teaching effectiveness. The successful candidate will be expected to primarily teach at the undergraduate level and mentor students and graduate instructors. The successful candidate must be committed to equity and inclusion, be an excellent teacher, and able to work with students, faculty, staff and community partners from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their teaching, professional activity, and service. The Teaching Professor title confers the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate and has the payroll title Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE). An LPSOE is eligible for promotion to "Security of Employment," which is analogous to tenure.

In order to be considered, candidates must have a PhD in sociology by the position start date; a strong record of teaching effectiveness; and, demonstrable interest in working with students from diverse backgrounds.
We seek outstanding teachers who will establish and maintain creative teaching programs; participate in creating a senior capstone course at UC Merced; participate actively in the development of graduate student and lecturer teaching; and, teach effectively at the undergraduate level.
The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2019.
