Sociology professor Charlie Eaton's research was cited today in a major New York Times investigative report on the use of off-shore accounts by wealthy colleges to avoid taxes on endowments. Professor Eaton has studied how elite private colleges have maintained small and mostly wealthy student bodies despite increasing public subsidies for private endowments. He is quoted in the Times saying, "Universities urgently need to grapple with this. Because people genuinely feel that our elite universities have become islands of wealth."
