Sociology professor, Dr. Daisy Reyes, has published an op-ed in De Los highlighting the struggles of first-generation Latinx college graduates in the aftermath of the recent L.A. wildfires. Dr. Reyes examines the stories of individuals like Sylvia Zamora, a first-generation college graduate and sociology professor, whose dream of homeownership in the Altadena foothills was destroyed in the fires.
Through personal accounts, Dr. Reyes illustrates how many middle-class Latinx families continue to face financial instability despite educational and professional success, burdened by student debt, high housing costs, and caregiving responsibilities. Her piece calls for greater recognition of the unique challenges faced by this group, especially in disaster recovery efforts.
