Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be in the writing stage of their dissertation.
  • This program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders).

American Educational Research Association Dissertation Grant--$25,000--Apply by late September

Eligibility:

  • Should be advanced doctoral students at the dissertation writing stage, usually the last year of study.
  • Applicants may be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents enrolled in a doctoral program. Non-U.S. citizens enrolled in a doctoral program at an U.S. institution are also eligible to apply.
  • Project must include analysis of large-scale dataset.
  • Project should assess STEM policies/practices.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) Dissertation Fellowship--$20,000--Apply by early November

Eligibility:

  • American Fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants). Members and officers of the AAUW Board of Directors are not eligible to apply for fellowships and grant awards. AAUW staff or volunteers with decision-making authority who wish to apply for an award must recuse themselves from the decision-making process.
  • American Fellowship candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • American Fellowships are open to women scholars in all fields of study.
  • The American Dissertation Fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation. Applicants must have completed all coursework, passed all preliminary exams, and had the dissertation research proposal or plan approved by application deadline.
  • Students already holding a fellowship or grant for the purpose of supporting their final year of writing or completing the dissertation the year before the fellowship year are not eligible to apply.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Dissertation Fellowship--$20,000--Apply by mid-November

Eligibility:

  • International fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants).   • Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.

  • Hold an academic degree (earned in the U.S. or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by November 15, 2019.

Barbara Rosenblum Dissertation Scholarship for the Study of Women and Cancer--$2,500-- Apply by Apirl 1, 2020

The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage doctoral research in sociology, anthropology, psychology and related fields on women’s experience of breast cancer and other reproductive cancers and the prevention of these cancers. Another goal of the scholarship is to encourage scholars to make this type of research accessible to the public through speaking and publishing for lay audiences.

This scholarship is awarded to a dissertation writing PhD student who has studied for at least one full academic year at a two-year college in the U.S., before transferring to complete a BA.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship--$25,000--Apply by mid-November

Eligibility:

  • Be candidates for Ph.D. or Th.D. degrees in an American doctoral program at a graduate school located in the United States. Candidates working on D.Min., law, Psy.D., Ed.D. and other professional degrees are not eligible.
  • Have all pre-dissertation requirements fulfilled by the application deadline, including approval of the dissertation proposal.
  • Be in the writing stage of the dissertation. Usually, this means that fieldwork or other research is complete and writing has begun by the time of the award.
  • Must expect to complete the dissertation between (check website for timeframe as it changes every year).
  • Have never held a similar national award for the final year of dissertation writing. Applicants who have won such awards as the ACLS, AAUW, Ford, Mellon, NAEd/Spencer, or Whiting fellowship are not eligible.
  • Be in a humanities or social science department, writing on topics where ethical or religious values are a central concern.
  • Have never applied for the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship before. Previous applicants may not apply.

Cheryl Allyn Miller Award--$500--Apply in October

This award recognizes a sociology graduate student, or a recent doctorate, whose research or activism constitutes an outstanding contribution to the field of women and work.

Eligibility:

  • Be Ph.D. candidates in a humanities or social science department in the United States.
  • Have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation (i.e., obtained ABD status) by the application deadline.
  • Be no more than six years into the degree program at the time of application. This includes time spent earning an MA within that program.
  • Not currently hold or have previously held a dissertation completion fellowship.
  • Have not previously applied for this fellowship more than once.

NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program--$27,500--Apply by early October

Eligibility

  • Must be a candidate for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.
  • Proposed project must be an education research project. NAEd/Spencer funds studies that examine the efficacy of curriculum and teaching methods; however, the initial development of curriculum or instructional programs will not be funded.

NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program--$70,000--Apply by mid-November

The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)--~$23,000/9-12 months--Apply by early November

Eligibility:

  • Be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in humanities and humanistic social sciences in the United States.
  • Must request nine to twelve months of on-site, site-specific dissertation research with a minimum of six months of research outside of the United States. Research within the United States must be site-specific (e.g., at a particular archive) and cannot be at the applicant’s home institution unless that institution has necessary site-specific research holdings. Supports research only and may not be used for dissertation write-up.

Society for the Study of Social Problems Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate Fellowship--$15,000---Apply by February 1

Selection Criteria:

  • A person identified as either American Indian or Alaska Native, Arab/Middle Eastern/North African, Asian/Asian-American, Black/African American, Hispanic/ Latino, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, or, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) from one of the aforementioned groups, accepted into an accredited doctoral program in any one of the social and/or behavioral sciences so as to expand their perspectives in the pursuit and investigations into social problems.

  • Submission of a dissertation proposal of 15 or more double spaced pages is required. The student’s dissertation advisor’s letter should note that s/he expects the student to have defended the dissertation proposal and have achieved advanced status in the doctoral program (completed course work, examinations, and approval of their dissertation prospectus) by the end of the Spring 2020 academic year.

  • A grade point average or equivalent of at least 3.25 in one’s current graduate program [of study].

  • Evidence of a commitment to a career of scholar activism as demonstrated by: course and academic work and research, activism in school and/or community, career plans, mentoring members of marginalized populations, and volunteering and organizing around social justice issues as a scholar activist.

  • Statement of financial need as expressed by the applicant and Graduate Program Director or Advisor.

  • With the exception of DACA students, who are also eligible, applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
